![]() Gajendra was the king of all the other elephants in the herd. The Rtumat garden was created by Lord Varuna and was located on Mount Trikuta. Once upon a time there was an elephant named Gajendra who lived in a garden called Rtumat. The crocodile in its previous birth had been a Gandharva king called Huhu. ![]() It is narrated that Gajendra, in one of his previous births, was the celebrated King Indradyumna, a devotee of Vishnu. ![]() ![]() Henceforth Gajendra achieved moksha or salvation and went to Vaikuntha with Vishnu. Gajendra Moksha StoryĪs per the legend, Lord Vishnu came down to earth to protect Gajendra, the elephant, from the clutches of Makara, the Crocodile. It is said that Gajendra is the man, the crocodile is sin, and the muddy water of the lake is Samsara. The Gajendra Moksha story hold an important place in Vaishnavism and has great symbolic value for Vishnu devotees. The Gajendra Moksha story is one of the most sacred narrations dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The story is narrated by Sri Suka to Emperor Parikshit at Parikshit’s request and is mentioned in the 8th Skandha of the Bhagvata Purana, a sacred book in Hinduism. Gajendra Moksha is is a Puranic legend of the liberation of Gajendra an elephant from Crocodile.
